Industrial power systems are shaped by the connected process. Large motors, rectifiers, variable-speed drives, furnaces, crushers, hoists and welding loads can create starting current, harmonics, rapid load cycling and mechanical stress that a general-purpose transformer specification does not describe. Selection begins with process data and the consequences of interruption.
Separate network duty from process duty
The incoming power transformer must satisfy utility voltage, fault level and plant load growth. Downstream distribution and special transformers must then match the connected process. A rectifier transformer, isolation transformer or mining explosion-protected unit cannot be selected from kVA and voltage alone; pulse number, harmonic spectrum, duty cycle, enclosure and protection philosophy are essential.

Environmental design
Altitude, temperature, dust, corrosive atmosphere, vibration and access for maintenance affect enclosure, insulation, creepage, cooling and coating. Outdoor substations may require filtered ventilation, HVAC, space heaters or corrosion systems. Underground mining equipment requires a project-specific explosion-protection and certification review; generic website information is not a substitute for that approval.
Protection and operational interfaces
Transformer protection, motor protection, process interlocks and emergency shutdown signals should be defined together. Relay functions, CT ratios, breaker control, PLC or DCS interfaces and permissive logic belong in the approved control philosophy. For maintainability, access, isolation points, spare feeders and replacement strategy should be reviewed before the enclosure arrangement is frozen.
